What does a month of gun violence in Tennessee really look like? Over the 31 days of May, 131 Tennesseans were shot.  Eight-four were killed, an average of 2.7 per day.

In the past, NRA President Wayne LaPierre has urged Americans to take up arms to protect themselves from the “terrorists, home invaders, drug cartels, carjackers, knockout gamers and rapers, and haters and campus killers, and airport killers, shopping mall killers, and killers” lurking in our communities. 

Anyone watching the news or reading the headlines in the paper knows that we have a problem in our country, and in our state, with shootings.  But as researchers trying to reduce gun injuries and deaths, Safe Tennessee wants to understand the scope of gun violence in Tennessee. Why are people being shot? Where are people being shot? How often are people using guns to defend themselves? How frequent are officer-involved shootings? How often are shootings the result of a robbery? How often are they the result of an argument? How many shootings involve kids? 

Using data from The Gun Violence Archive, Safe Tennessee tracked every single shooting incident in Tennessee for the month of May. For our count, we included any incident where shots were fired, even when there were no injuries, and incidents where a firearm was brandished.  We did not include any incidents where a gun was brought to school but not fired in the incident count (although it is included in the listings below), or incidents where a prohibited purchaser was arrested on another charge and found to be in possession of a firearm.

While there were certainly shootings related to robberies and home invasions, and incidents where gun owner used a gun in self-defense, the vast majority of Tennessee shootings were either the result of an argument or the motive for the shooting, at least initially, was unknown and not related to commission of another crime such as a robbery. Generally in these cases, law enforcement is called to a scene where they find an individual shot, sometimes injured, sometimes deceased.

These shootings do not appear to be random and are possibly the result of an ongoing dispute between people who know each other. In fact, research shows that acts of violent are rarely random, and are instead concentrated within small social networks. In other words, most people are shot by someone they know.

Firearm suicides are on ongoing issue in our state.  A new report from the CDC shows that suicides in Tennessee have increased by more than 24 percent.  Firearm suicides remain the most common means of suicide, nationally and in Tennessee. Firearm suicides are unique in both their impulsivity and their lethality. In May, there were three firearm suicides reported in the media, and those numbers are reflected below. However, on average, over 50 Tennesseans a month use a gun to take their own life.

GUN VIOLENCE IN TENNESSEE – MAY 2018

• According to media reports, in the month of May, there were 125 incidents resulting in 84 injuries and 47 deaths.
• There was one mass shooting in Memphis, resulting in four injuries and six deaths. (In April, there were two mass shootings, one in Wartburg and the Waffle House shooting in Antioch).
• There were five murder-suicides, resulting in 12 deaths. Three occurred in Townsend, Chattanooga, and Paris, and two occurred in Murfreesboro. (There has already been one in June.)
• There were four officer-involved shootings. They occurred in Memphis, Morristown, Greenville, and Portland.
• One law enforcement officer was fatally shot in Dickson by a man with a history of domestic assault.
• There were six incidents described as robberies or attempted robberies, resulting in three injuries.  No shots were fired in three of the incidents.
• There were five incidents of defensive gun use where a gun owner used a gun to defend themselves or scare off a would be thief, resulting in two injuries and one death.  In two incidents, no one was shot.
• There were five unintentional shootings, resulting in four injuries and one death.  Of the four injuries, three were children: a 2-year-old unintentionally shot by her mother, a 10-year-old unintentionally shot by his father, and a 10-year-old unintentionally shot by a friend.
• There were two shootings that were the result of an adult’s negligent gun storage.  A 5-year-old gained access to his mother’s gun in a car and fired it into the ground. An elementary school student in Waynesboro brought a gun to school and unintentionally discharged it.
• There were two shootings described by law enforcement as being domestic in nature, resulting in two deaths.
• There were 27 shootings that stemmed from an argument or dispute, resulting in 18 injuries and eight deaths.
• There were two shootings between adult siblings, resulting in one injury and one death.  In one incident, a brother fatally shot his brother during an argument. In another incident, a brother shot and injured his sister.

• There were 63 shootings where a motive was not immediately clear or was not reported, resulting in 55 injuries and 17 deaths.

A Shell gas station employee told police that he was taking a smoke break when he was approached by three suspects and at least two of them were armed. A 24-year-old man was killed in a shooting outside of a hookah lounge in Antioch Friday morning. Investigators said the victim pulled his car into the parking lot behind a man who was trying to back out of his parking space. The victim and the driver reportedly got into an argument, which is when the suspect shot into victim’s vehicle. He died at the scene, according to police. The suspect fled the parking lot in either a white or gray sedan. Authorities say he was armed with a black semi-automatic handgun. Police are working to find the suspect.

Motive: Murder-suicide
The deaths of a former University of Tennessee professor and his lawyer wife, who were found dead in their home Saturday, are consistent with a murder-suicide. As officers responded to a welfare check after receiving word of a person in the home with a weapon, they heard a gunshot. Kenneth Allan Jacobs, former director of the UT School of Music’s composition program and his wife, attorney Melinda Howes Jacobs, both died from fatal gunshot wounds.

Amanda Gaunichaux was a heart nurse practitioner at Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital for eight years.

A couple was exiting their car outside of their home when a man opened fire, hitting the woman in her ankle and shattering their car windows. Officers marked 13 shell casings. Sean Ganey, 29, shot his wife, Cassidy Ganey; her stepmother, Shelly Lorenz-Adair; and her father, Kenny Adair, and then himself. A handgun was found at the scene beside the bodies. Deputies had been called to the home Friday and had taken Sean Ganey to a hospital after he expressed suicidal thoughts. A child was present in the home around the time of the shooting but is safe.

A prostitute went to a motel to meet a client. She did not know which room the buyer was in and started knocking on doors at random. After knocking on one door, a group of people came out and started arguing. An employee of the hotel told police the situation calmed down, however, eventually, a member of the group started shooting in the direction of the woman.

A man was struck by shotgun pellets in the back of his head after a shotgun was fired into the back of his vehicle outside a Lebanon Walmart. Lebanon police reported witnesses said a dark-colored sedan, possibly a Nissan Altima, pulled behind a vehicle in the parking lot and “verbal statements were made.”  This led to the shooting. The dark car with the shooter inside fled the scene. Lebanon police said it is believed that all parties involved were familiar with each other.

Steven Wiggins, 31, a man with a history of domestic abuse and assault fatally shot a Dickson County Deputy after he responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle. Wiggins was at large for several days before being apprehended by authorities. The TBI also arrested Erika Castro-Miles, a 38-year-old Dickson woman, on a charge of first-degree murder related to the shooting. The slain deputy, Sgt. Daniel Baker,  a young father and 10-year veteran of the department with a record of heroism had also served in the Marines.
