Another school shooting. Another group of grief-stricken, heartbroken families. Another student body traumatized at the sight of classmates gunned down in front of them.  Another community devastated. More photos of kids evacuating their school after a school shooting. More politicians sending thoughts and prayers who will do absolutely nothing to prevent this from happening again.  More students accepting the reality that any of them could be shot in their schools.

So far this year according to data from The Gun Violence Archive, there have been 34 school shootings where a person was injured or killed on the campus of a K-12 school or college or university.  34 shootings resulting in 65 injuries and 44 fatalities. 24 of these schools shootings happened after Parkland. The vast majority of these casualties are of course young people.

Mass shootings and school shootings are so common in American that students expect them to happen.

Interviewer: Was there a part of you that was like “This isn’t real. This would not happen at my school.”

Student: (shakes head) No. No there wasn’t.

Interviewer: Why so?

Student: It’s been happening everywhere. I’ve always kind of felt eventually it was going to happen here, too.
